North’s wrestling team will kick off the postseason at the Division I Austintown Fitch sectional tournament on Saturday.Three Rangers were nominated for one of the top seeds in their respective weight classes, including Kolt Karovich, Rion Dancy-Toma, and Timmy Jesenovec.Karovich, a senior 126-pounder, is 32-7 on the year while junior Dancy-Toma is 31-8 at 150 pounds. Survive and advance is the postseason mantra, and Eastlake North did exactly that Saturday at the OHSAA Division I sectional at Mayfield — turning a pressure-packed meet into a ticket to another week of the season.The Rangers qualified for the district meet in two relays and six individual swims, with Caden Reyes leading the charge in four events and Amir Mahraz and Christopher Pawlowski each moving on in three.“It is a huge weight lifted off my shoulders,” Pawlowski said. “Our whole team went in with expectations of making it to this level, and meeting that is a huge relief.”Reyes, a sophomore, delivered one of the strongest all-around performances of the day. North’s wrestling team turned in a solid performance at the final Western Reserve Conference tournament held at Chardon High School on Saturday. The Rangers finished with one champion and five more wrestlers who finished among the top four at their respective weight classes. Senior Timmy Jesenovec was dominant in winning the 175-pound bracket. Jesenovec went 3-0 with three pins, all in the first period. His fastest fall took just 19 seconds. Rion Dancy-Toma placed second at 150 pounds. He finished with three pins and a major decision before falling to eventual champion Dominic Moses of Mayfield, 3-2, in his final bout of the tournament. Kolt Karovich finished as the runner-up at 126 pounds. He finished 4-1 with a loss to eventual champion Carter Baran of Kenston. Miles Sullivan (190) and Michael Belanich (285) each finished third. The Rangers traveled across town and came away with a sweep in a girls-boys doubleheader against Willoughby South, pulling away for a 55-24 victory in the girls’ game before rallying late for a 52-44 win in the boys’ matchup. The girls earned a season sweep over the Rebels, while the boys secured a much-needed rivalry win on South’s home floor. WICKLIFFE — Eastlake North and Willoughby South traded victories Thursday at Wickliffe Lanes, as the Rebels captured the girls match while the Rangers answered with a tight win in the boys competition ahead of Friday’s Western Reserve Conference tournament. South’s girls earned a 1936-1911 victory behind a balanced effort led by Hailey Florence’s 395 series. Kira Woodring added a 362, Abby Handy rolled 268, and Lily Smiciklas finished with 252 as the Rebels built enough cushion to hold off a late push from North. North stayed within striking distance thanks to Hailey Sauric’s 339 and Kristina DiDonato’s 331, while Chloe Sutton contributed 302, Anna Spataro added 284, and Kailee Crissey finished with 243. WILLOUGHBY--Eastlake North and Willoughby South split a tightly contested swimming dual meet Friday at the West End YMCA, with South doing just enough across both lineups to claim the combined victory, 158-152. South won the girls' meet, 91-69, while North countered by taking the boys' side, 83-67, creating a back-and-forth meet that stayed undecided until the final relays. On the girls’ side, South’s depth showed early and often. KIRTLAND--Kirtland leaned on its senior leadership when things tightened up, turning back visiting North, 60-45, in a nonconference matchup Thursday. Senior Lucas Renfro took over in the fourth quarter, pouring in 14 of his game-high 27 points to lift the Hornets to the win. “Lucas has done a great job as a senior leader. Caden Reyes saved his biggest moment for last, touching the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke to punctuate Eastlake North’s third-place finish at the final Western Reserve Conference swimming & diving championships on Saturday, while the Rangers’ girls placed sixth overall.“I can’t even put it into words,” Reyes said. “The feeling when I touched the wall and realized that I would be the last winner of that event meant everything to me. Two North wrestlers placed among the top four at the Columbia Invitational Tournament on Saturday.Seniors Timmy Jesenovec (175) and Michael Belanich (285) finished in third place in their respective weight classes.“Overall, I was pretty happy with my performance,” Jesenovec said. “This was my first week back after I tore my pectoral muscle, so I was glad that I could come back and wrestle.”Jesenovec drew a first-round bye, then dropped into the consolation bout after a loss to eventual tournament winner Nico Helton of Norwalk.He then won four straight matches—three by pin and one by technical fall—to finish third.“After that loss, I made it my goal to come back for third,” he said. “My strategy was to control the pace of the match and win quickly.”Belanich opened the tournament with back-to-back first-period pins before dropping his semifinal bout. North sophomore Temperance Martinez closed out the weekend by winning the 115-pound championship at the 2025 Vermilion Defense Soap Invitational on Sunday.Martinez finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, three pins, and a major decision.“I was very satisfied with my performance today,” she said. “I was seeded third, but I came out at first.
