Tempe Martinez Places Second at Lady Viking Invitational
North’s Tempe Martinez turned in a strong performance at the 2026 Vantage Lady Viking Invitational at Akron North on Sunday.
Martinez finished second at 115 pounds.
“I was very satisfied with my tournament placement today,” Martinez said. “I was seeded fourth, came out placing second. I had some good competition this weekend.”
Martinez recorded three first-period pins to advance to the championship bout. She worked to maintain her movement to set up her best shot attempts.
In the championship match, John Hay’s Cha Carter pinned Martinez in 5:43.
“I went in knowing it would be a tough match, she's a great wrestler,” Martinez said. “I took a couple shots, didn't finish them, and got myself in some bad situations. I plan to work on that this week before our next tournament.”
North’s Martinez wins Vermilion tournament championship

North sophomore Temperance Martinez closed out the weekend by winning the 115-pound championship at the 2025 Vermilion Defense Soap Invitational on Sunday.
Martinez finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, three pins, and a major decision.
“I was very satisfied with my performance today,” she said. “I was seeded third, but I came out at first. I really tried to be patient and wait for my opening during my matches.”
After opening the tournament with a major decision, Martinez flattened her next three opponents, all in the first period.
In the championship match, she pinned top-seeded Aubree Costlow of Midview in 1 minute, 56 seconds.
“I wouldn't say I was trying to be aggressive,” she said. “I needed to be tough but be careful and limit my mistakes.”
Martinez’s success didn’t happen by accident.
“I watched my opponents’ other matches, and this works well for me as I'm able to take advantage of knowing how to defend myself against the moves they use a lot,” she said.
North’s boys’ team competed at the Rebel Invitational Tournament at South on Saturday.
Kolt Karovich (126), Rion Dancy-Toma (150), and Michael Belanich (285) each placed fifth, and Zavian Santilla (113) and Matt Nadock (138) placed eighth in their respective weight classes.
