North senior Jacob Breen opened the season with a no-hitter in the Rangers’ 4-0 win over Tallmadge in Myrtle Beach on Friday.

Breen walked one and struck out 10.

“From the first pitch, I was locked in,” Breen said. “My arm felt good, and I had good command of my pitches. I had a great defense behind me with Patrick (Keough) and Gerardo (Torres) both calling an amazing game behind the plate.

Breen struck out two or more batters in four of seven innings.

“There is no better way to start a season,” he said. “Knowing my defense has my back and knowing we can get runs on offense has us heading home feeling ready for the rest of the season.”

The Rangers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning.

Nate Sagendorph singled to start the rally and Torres followed with a two-run homer to right field. Braylon Rolf then hit a one-out single and moved to third on Breen’s single. Ethan Grinstead’s groundout allowed Rolf to score to make it 3-0.

Keough hit a leadoff double in the fourth and scored on Sagendorph’s groundout.

Rolf led the Rangers at the plate as he finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored.

“It was very fun,” Rolf said of the season-opener. “Basketball season was rough on my body and I’m glad to be back out, especially on the Ripken fields.”

Rolf focused on putting the ball in play and was rewarded with a pair of hits.

“I was just staying confident in the box and looking to hit everything hard no matter the outcome,” he said.

Torres went 1-for-2 with two runs batted in, and Breen, Keough, Tyler Leasure, and Sagendorph each finished with one hit.

The Rangers close out their spring trip on Saturday against United Local.
