North closed out its spring trip to Myrtle Beach with a 15-0 three-inning win over United Local on Saturday.
The Rangers collected their second straight no-hitter to start the season.
“I felt good on the mound,” said North’s Gavin Rieder, who walked one and struck out five in three scoreless and hitless innings of work. My stuff was working. My command was solid today. I stayed ahead in the count and mixed in my curveball effectively. It had good movement, and I was locating it where I wanted.”
Rieder’s no-hitter followed Jacob Breen’s seven-inning no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Tallmadge on Friday.
“It’s a huge confidence boost for all of our pitchers,” Rieder said of the back-to-back no-hitters to start the season. “Seeing Jacob go out there and dominate yesterday fired me up to do the same. When we’re all throwing well, it gives us momentum and makes us even tougher to beat as we head back to Ohio.”
North jumped on United Local with four runs in the top of the first inning.
Gerardo Torres drew a leadoff walk and scored on Brady Trem’s triple.
“It was just great to get back on the field with the guys,” Trem said. “We all get along great and are always pulling for each other. There is some great team chemistry in this group of guys, and it’s a lot of fun out there.”
Braylon Rolf then hit an RBI single, and Ethan Grinstead drew a walk. Brady Pennza reached on an error that made it 3-0, and Patrick Keough hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 4-0.
The Rangers added two more in the second.
Torres and Trem singled to start the rally and Rolf tripled both runners home for a 6-0 North advantage.
North invoked the run rule with a nine-run third.
Tyler Leasure and Kris Fuller drew back-to-back walks to start the rally, and Drew Morbeto singled home Leasure. Torres then doubled home a pair of runs and scored on Trem’s RBI single. Rolf drew a walk, and Pennza hit a one-out RBI double. Keough followed with an RBI single, Fuller drew a two-out walk, and Morbeto reached on an error that allowed another runner to score. Vinny Marsico’s bases-loaded walk made it 14-0.
Joey Andolina’s RBI single closed out the scoring.
United Local went in order in the bottom of the third to seal North’s win.
Trem led the Rangers at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance with two runs scored and two RBI.
“I am always going to be aggressive every at-bat, but that goes along with not being too picky,” Trem said. “If the pitcher throws it in the zone, I will hit it. When our pitchers are throwing no hitters, it makes it easier at the plate. However, our whole team is really just playing all-around good baseball right now.”
Trem’s confidence is sky-high after North’s 2-0 start.
“I always try to not get too high or low on my mental approach to the game, but it is nice to see some hits fall,” he said. “I will always have confidence no matter if I am 0-for-3 or 3-for-3, because I trust my work ethic and thousands of swings. The team is collectively hitting well, and I hope that our guys can keep their same confidence come our next game.”
Torres went 2-ffor-2 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI, and Rolf also collected two hits for the Rangers.
Keough, Pennza, Trem, and Torres each recorded two RBI for the Rangers.
North travels to Benedictine on Wednesday.
